People don’t talk about loneliness—or at least, they don’t like to. And yet everyone is surely familiar with that feeling of not belonging, of having no one who thinks of you, no one to talk to or who will give you a hug when you feel like it. For some people, it’s just a phase that passes quickly; for others, it’s a state that can last for many years. Deep-seated loneliness is a terrible feeling that is hard to bear.

It affects all generations: older people due to retirement, the death of a partner, or the loss of youth and mobility. Young people who may be well connected on WhatsApp, Instagram or TikTok, but perhaps have no one who touches their soul and understands them.

You can feel lonely at any age and at any stage of life.

Quite different from the loneliness described above is self-imposed solitude, which one consciously seeks in order to find peace, to read or paint, to enjoy nature and to be entirely at one with oneself: at times, a truly blissful feeling.

Loneliness is not an objective state; it is a feeling and has many facets: one can feel lonely even amongst friends, or, conversely, feel completely alone yet connected to everything.

‘Attachment’, on the other hand, is more of a state than a feeling, but how can one describe it, and can it be created? How does that work, and what obstacles must be overcome to achieve it? And what role do faith, values, religion or simply the willingness to join forces with like-minded people play in this?
